The success story of SAX Power

Battery storage manufacturer SAX Power is based in Erbach near Ulm. It manufactures home storage systems there using a revolutionary new, patented multilevel technology. The storage systems are particularly suitable for photovoltaic systems and achieve the highest efficiency on the market (most recently demonstrated in HTW Berlin’s storage inspection in July 2025, where the SAX Power Home Plus was the test winner). This means more of the electricity from your roof can be used, saving you real money. In addition to higher efficiency, the technology is also characterized by ease of maintenance and a longer service life.

The company’s beginnings are in Ulm, where its predecessor company developed control equipment for Deutsche Bahn. In doing so, the founders came up with the idea of transferring certain principles to electricity storage systems for photovoltaic installations. Several years of research and development were needed until it succeeded and led to a revolutionary result: the world’s first storage system that can output AC power directly from its battery cells, without a downstream inverter.

How was the new invention received?

The battery storage manufacturer SAX Power, founded in 2019, initially produced a pre-series of the device to eliminate teething problems. It then began large-scale manufacturing and marketing, which attracted a great deal of attention. Skepticism among experts regularly gave way to enthusiasm when they were able to test and experience the novel storage system for themselves. In 2021, the invention received the renowned ees Award from the solar industry, and in 2022 it received the Baden-Württemberg State Innovation Award.

What changed as a result of the new storage system?

As a result, customers and investors alike were lining up, so that within a few years two production halls and an office building were built at the new site in Erbach. The young, fast-growing battery storage manufacturer is now well known in the industry and is giving electricity storage systems a new image: instead of bulky boxes that hum away in the boiler room, there is now a slim, elegantly designed device with no noise emissions that can be installed anywhere.

The expansion of the product range is aligned with market requirements. The first storage model, SAX Power Home with a capacity of 5.8 kWh, was followed by SAX Power Home Plus with 7.7 kWh, and then even larger storage systems for commerce and industry. The German federal government is now supporting the development of large-scale storage systems (Megastorage) using SAX technology, which are becoming increasingly important for the transition to renewable energy.

From the very beginning, SAX Power has relied on high-quality and safe lithium iron phosphate battery cells to build its storage systems. Development of sodium-ion-based cells is currently progressing rapidly—and since SAX technology can be applied regardless of cell type, the battery storage manufacturer can switch at any time once the technology reaches the appropriate level of maturity.

And what if I don’t have photovoltaics?

Home storage systems are now also attractive for homes without a PV system—namely for the increasingly important dynamic electricity tariffs. Combined with intelligent energy management, the SAX storage system can charge from the grid when electricity is cheapest—and then feed it back when it is needed. This can save a lot of money, especially with a heat pump or an electric car.

What is the outlook for the future?

In the future, the company sees other applications for its technology. There are many possible uses for mobile storage systems, for example in construction, but the topic of e-mobility is even more exciting: the SAX storage system without an inverter not only saves space and weight, it also brings a completely new level of safety. The multilevel technology ensures that after shutdown—or even after an accident—there are no high voltage or current values present within milliseconds. If the SAX principle is used in electric cars in the future, problems with fires or explosions will be a thing of the past. This would enable the battery storage manufacturer from Erbach to give a major boost not only to the energy transition, but also to the mobility transition.
